Transept 'TRSPT001' Dronehenge Records Released January 24th 2011
|
Transept emerged over the last year from the musically promiscuous scene in Norwich. Liam and Alex were playing in a four-piece improvised vintage synth/noise performance at the Aldeburgh Festival, and were walking round a church before hand wondering if they were in 'the transept' or not, and joked it would be a good name for a prog-folk band. A few weeks later Alex had a solo gig in Norwich that he hadn’t planned anything for, and asked Liam to help out. They had a few ideas but no name, so took ‘Transept’. The gig was awful. Six months and several gigs later however, they had a track they wanted a guitar solo on, so asked Phil and that was that - Transept had fully formed. Not as a prog-folk band I must add but as a prog-folk-electronic-experimental-space rock triumvirate. With tracks mostly clocking the 8 minute mark on the album, and anything upward of that live, and mostly instrumental this album documents a moment of the band and a set of compositions that have been constantly changing and evolving over their short time in existence. Influences; Phil Archer who played laser crystals, plastic pipe, bowed antler, samples, plant-controlled omnichord, the foghorn accordion, synthesiser, omnichord circuit board, PD programming and dub chamber - lucky dragons, zombi, anne laplantine Alex Sanders who played synthesisers, copper pipe, programming, organ, samples, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, vocals, gongs, feedback, drum machine and melodica - flaming lips, la monte young, elton john, matching mole, faust & amon duul II. Liam Wells who played synthesisers, baritone guitar, noise, gongs and accordion - merzbow, phill niblock, eleh, goblin, sunn0, acid mothers temple, magnet, john carpenter like?
